We have a list we have put up for the top 10 Nigerian artistes that are not easily defeated on a beat or who always stand out on a music collaboration or always spices up a song with their input.

We are not in anyway listing most successful Nigerian artistes, top 10 richest Nigerian musicians, or top 10 richest artists in Nigeria or most bankable Nigerian artistes. The emphasis is more on their creativity and flexibility in the ability to deliver very well on quite a range of beats. Hence, Top 10 Nigerian artistes

10. Mayorkun

Mayorkun

Mayorkun (The Mayor of Lagos) is a Nigerian Afro-pop singer/songwriter who rose to fame recording for Davido’s label in the late 2010s.

Born Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel in Osun State, Mayorkun’s creativity was fostered from a young age by his parents: his mother is an actress and his father a film producer and artist. After earning an accounting degree from University of Lagos, he spent several years working at a bank while writing and recording songs on the side. He was plucked from obscurity in 2016 when Nigerian-American star Davido came across a video of Mayorkun covering one of his songs online. Intrigued, Davido reached out to the young artist and after hearing some of his original songs, offered him a contract to his Davido Music Worldwide label. Mayorkun debuted later that year with “Eleko,” a warm, melodic, synth pop single whose video racked up millions of views in its first couple of weeks.

Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe (born 14 June 2002), known professionally as Ayra Starr, is a Nigerian singer. Born in Cotonou, Benin, Ayra Starr began a fashion career at the age of 16 with Quove Model Management before deciding to pursue music. After covering several songs by popular artists on Instagram, she posted her first original song on her page in December 2019. This brought her to the attention of record executive Don Jazzy, and led to her signing to Mavin Records.

In early 2021, Ayra Starr achieved mainstream recognition with her eponymous debut extended play and its hit track “Away” which spent two consecutive weeks at number four on Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 50 and went to number 17 on US Billboard Top Triller Global, paving the way for the release of her first full-length studio album, 19 & Dangerous in August 2021. Categorized mainly as Afropop and R&B, the album has been met with favorable critical reception. It spawned two top forty hits in Nigeria. The lead single “Bloody Samaritan” peaked atop the Top 50 chart, becoming the first solo song by a female artist to reach the number-one position. Fireboy DML is a Nigerian Afrobeats and R&B singer who rose to global success in the early 2020s.

Born Adedamola Adefolahan in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Fireboy began taking music seriously during his university days and later signed a deal with Olamide’s YBNL Nation label largely on the strength of his song “Jealous.” The label featured it on their 2018 collaborative album YBNL Mafia Family, then re-released “Jealous” on its own the following year. A second single, the romantic “What If I Say” preceded the November 2019 release of Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps which also yielded the streaming hit “Vibrations.” The album topped the Nigerian charts and Fireboy capitalized on his momentum by delivering a follow-up, Apollo, less than a year later. Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael (born 19 December 1994), known professionally as Zlatan Ibile, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, musician and dancer from Ijurin Ekiti, Ijero local government area, Ekiti state. Simisola is a Nigerian Afropop vocalist with a ballad-centric set of influences.

Born and raised in Ojuelegba, a suburb of Surele, Simi (born Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye) found her natural voice in her early years as part of Outstandin’, a musical group at her local church. Taking her talents into the studio, it was not long before the young vocalist made her presence known: her professional debut, 2008’s Oga Ju, was a D.I.Y. collection of gospel tunes. The 2014 EP Restless gave the young musician her first taste of the spotlight. Primarily composed of covers, including Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain,” the project landed the young musician a record deal with X3M Music.

One of Nigeria’s most successful rappers, with numerous awards, hits, and endorsement deals to his name.

Olamide Adedeji was born in Bariga, Lagos State in 1989. He decided to become a musician in 2000, and he started his career a decade later, signing to Coded Tunes and releasing the single “Eni Duro” in 2010. The song became a hit, and Olamide performed at the Hip Hop World Awards (later renamed the Headies) in 2010. Davido was born David Adedeji Adeleke in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1992. His interest in music began while attending Oakwood University in his late teens, and he started making his own beats and investigating music production. He dropped out of school and began pursuing music full-time, relocating to Lagos, Nigeria, and releasing his debut single, “Back When,” in 2011. Tiwa Savage is a Nigerian vocalist and songwriter whose upbeat dance-pop synthesizes Afropop, reggae, and contemporary R&B.

Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Tiwatope Savage moved with her family to England when she was 11 years old. During the latter half of the ’90s, she established herself as a background vocalist, and opted to leave the accounting world when she was sought by Mary J. Blige. Though she had a business administration degree from Kent University, she furthered her music career by attending Berklee College of Music on scholarship.

Prior to her graduation, she competed on The X Factor (U.K.) during series three and made it to the final 24. During the next couple years, Savage raised her stock with additional background work, such as an appearance on Whitney Houston’s I Look to You (2009), and the landing of songwriting credits on a handful of albums, including Fantasia’s Grammy-nominated Back to Me. Burna Boy was born Damini Ogulu in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, in 1991.

With his fusion of dancehall, reggae, Afrobeat, and pop, Burna Boy emerged in the early part of the 2010s as one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising stars. The LeriQ-produced 2012 single “Like to Party” proved to be his breakout track and paved the way for his full-length debut, L.I.F.E, a year later.

Over the next five years, Odogwu Burna released two more albums and collaborated with a variety of artists, from J Hus and Skales to Fall Out Boy and Lilly Allen. His international exposure widened with 2018’s Outside, which hit number three on the Billboard Reggae chart and won the Nigeria Entertainment Award for Album of the Year. 2019’s African Giant and 2020’s Twice as Tall were both widely acclaimed and charted in several countries.
